Masterclass, Microsoft Certification, and a Bright Spot

You may have heard that Prairie Lakes libraries have been granted free licenses to Masterclass  for a full year. Yesterday Rob sent in an application for the same access for KCLS patrons. Stay tuned for word on whether we will be selected for this limited time offer.

________________________

This week we put our hat in the ring to become a Microsoft Certification Hub. Here's what the project entails and how we would participate, if chosen. We'll know in January.

The project: DPI is partnering with multiple agencies that support training and certification via Microsoft Learn. Within Microsoft Learn, individuals  can achieve industry-recognized credentials of different Microsoft certification tracks (including everything from .NET, Microsoft 365, the Microsoft Office Suite, and more). These credentials can help position job seeking patrons throughout Wisconsin communities to acquire high-paying, technology-relevant careers.  Microsoft was awarded a grant through DPI to provide these certifications at no extra cost to schools and libraries; this program can provide patrons (and even interested library staff) with Microsoft Office Specialist and Microsoft Certified Fundamentals certifications offered by Certiport.

DPI is looking to work directly with Library Systems to identify specific libraries throughout different regions of Wisconsin that will have the capacity to serve as certification proctoring hubs, whom in turn could work with other local libraries in the region to promote the opportunity – ensuring patrons throughout the whole state can easily locate a nearby space to seek credentialing. Best of all, Certiport has confirmed that testing can occur both in-person and remotely – with librarians facilitating virtual proctoring. This means folks with a home internet connection can easily access the credentialing process without having to worry about travel.

Timeline: Come January 2024, Ben Miller & Chris Baker from DPI Library Team will contact the selected libraries to work with them on this project.

“Hub” libraries: What does this mean for the selected libraries? Here is what they can expect:

  • Library capacity & commitment: Relative to patron interest, the time commitment will be similar to test proctoring if that is already offered at a library. So if a community shows interest in Microsoft certifications, a library might want to donate more time to it. Generally, it works well when a library staff member plans for certain hours each week to be set aside (just in case) for certification.
    • Example: This might be promoted as “Microsoft Certification Proctoring by Request on Tuesdays from 1:00-3:00 pm and Thursdays from 5:00-7:00 pm; reserve a timeslot “here” [insert link] and contact us for special requests.”
  • Library responsibilities: Similar to proctoring; making sure that users seeking certification are following all expected steps to successfully complete their credentialing along certain proctoring guidelines. This may include a few more technology-based pieces for virtual proctoring (DPI can get clarification on that when/if needed and can involve proper system IT).
  • Library staff training: Library staff involved will receive approximately 30-minute training via webinar with ongoing direct support/clarification as needed or requested.
  • Will they need to be Microsoft experts?: No! However, if a staff person is interested in getting Microsoft certification themselves, they are welcome to take advantage of the opportunity themselves.

This week's Bright Spots come from Michelle:
" Last week when I was sick and unexpectedly gone for the entire week, Katie E. kept our department running seamlessly.  She is such an asset to KPL and to me, and I am continually grateful for everything she does. I could not do this job without her!"
I'll add my thanks, as well. Katie is a perfect match for our admin team and we are thrilled to have her on board! Barb

And from Marcia:
"I received a call from a senior patron, LD, to say how wonderful and surprising the Lobby Stop was at Saxony Manor this month. She went on to rave about how Kristen S and Hillary are just the best outreach providers and she is so happy to have gotten to know them this year. LD also went on to say that she heard Kristin Kornkven is retiring and she wanted to just wish her the very best retirement and thank her for all the genuinely fantastic library service she has given her for many years.  She used to be a Simmons patron for a long time before she moved, and then she continued to call Kristin for things just because she was a great librarian."

(Great job, Kristen and Hillary! And we will certainly miss you, KK!) BB

Happy holiday weekend, everyone! I hope you all have a wonderful time. I'll be out starting tomorrow until the new year, with a sneak appearance on the 29th to sign checks.

Wage increases on the way

Here's a blog post that fits into my favorite category- the annual announcement of a staff wage increase. This year there is another layer to the increase- an additional step to each position that frees those people at the top of their scale to finally get an additional step. On January 1st, everyone will receive a 2.5% increase in their wages. If you also get a satisfactory performance review this year, your wages will move up to the next step on your anniversary date. Each step is a variable increase that's most often around the 2.5% mark. So most people will see a 5% increase in their wages this year.

Our new date for occupancy of the Uptown Children's Library is May 24, 2024, about a month after we expected to move in. So we'll be hiring new staff a little later in the year and the Playmaker training for all YFS staff will also be moved to spring.

We were not awarded the much anticipated NEH grant for the Simmons restoration. So instead of major construction, we'll be working with city capital funding to tuckpoint the limestone joints and rebuild some collapsed drainage pipes to make the building as water tight as possible.

The Northside Library will get a new air conditioning system this year, replacing the original units that barely made it through last summer.

We'll be bringing around a small holiday gift for everyone tomorrow. If we miss you, we'll leave it with your manager, so check in with them if we don't see you. Hope it brings you some cheer this holiday season.

I'll be with the grandkids next week. I'm always available by phone, but if you can't reach me, Brandi is next in line for any emergencies.

Happy holidays, everyone!

A little News for the week

Ellen Kupfer and I went to the Potawatomi Casino last night with high hopes of bringing home a big check for $25,000. So did 140 other organizations. Twenty went home with a check, but all we got was a belly full of tacos and a crazy little momento of our visit. But we had a lot of fun and we'll try again next year!

We have an occupancy day from our builders- the day they hand over the keys to a finished new children's library:

May 24, 2024

So we can breathe a little and take some extra time to pull it all together. Construction begins Monday and we'll start taking pics every week to track progress and share with all of you. It's going to be a lot of fun to watch this come to life!

Lots of staff are sick already- it's going to be a tough winter season. Remember to drink a lot of water, wash your hands a lot, and sleep more than usual. The city is arranging to offer the next round of free COVID vaccines for both FT and PT staff at the transit center. It's not a booster shot- it's a whole new shot for protection from the latest virus variant. I'll let you know as soon as those are available. I understand that in the future they plan to combine the flu and COVID shots, but not yet, so get that flu shot separately if you haven't already.

We have a little holiday gift for each of you that we'll distribute next week.

Happy weekend, everyone!

Congratulations and Kudos

Is it nearly mid-December already? We'd better hurry up and celebrate!

  • Congrats to Megan on the acceptance of her program submission to ALA! Megan will share her wisdom on library outreach to people experiencing homelessness at next year's ALA Annual conference in San Diego.
  • Congrats to the Uptown Children's Library Capital Campaign Committee for raising $1,342,550 toward the completion of the space!
  • Congratulations to Kristin and Debbie K on their impending retirements! Look for party announcements soon.
  • Let's celebrate the holidays on Thursday at the Civil War Museum with pizza provided by the Mayor
  • And hopefully Brandi and I will bring home $25,000 from the Potawatomi Casino on Thursday evening!
Our December Library Board meeting is Tuesday at 5:30pm at SW.

I'm taking a day off on Monday but will be online Tuesday and Wednesday from home as I have work done on the house.

This week Bright Spots:

From Amy Rae:

"I was just chatting with one of our regulars, who called out DJ Hanson specifically as someone who's been helpful to her family in the past - "he's SO nice, he's great." She told me about a time he discovered a picture book she'd brought back hadn't been checked in before it went back on the shelf.  In addition to fixing the problem, he made sure to reach out to the patron to ensure she and her kiddo had had a chance to read the book.  They ended up checking it out a second time because of his thoughtfulness.  She hastened to add that she thinks we're all awesome, but DJ received high praise in particular.  It sounds exactly like the above-and-beyond customer service I see him provide every day, so I wanted to make sure I passed it on.  ðŸ˜Š"

From Barb: Thanks to Aaron for always going out of his way to help me with resizing files and other tech stuff. You're the best!

Happy weekend, everyone!

Casino Grant Making, a Retirement, and Bright Spots

The road to collecting $3 million for the new children's library has been quite a ride with a lot of unexpected turns, and this week's invitation to a Milwaukee casino for a chance to win $25,000 from the Potawatomi's Heart of Canal Street grant funding  promises to be a good time. Twenty organizations selected from the pool of finalists (that's us) will share the $500,000 prize. Hopefully Lady Luck is on our side and if we win, Brandi and I will try hard not to gamble it all away on the way out (just kidding).

In another intriguing fundraising scheme, we have an insider connection to producer Ron Howard and the Netflix execs who are creating a film from Kenosha's own Florence Parry Heide's Shrinking Treehorn series. Will they make a gift to the campaign in Heide's honor? We'll see...

And, in a less flashy but even more potentially lucrative turn of events, the Governor has announced a surprise matching grant for shovel ready construction projects and the city's grant writer is completing the application on our behalf. We'll ask for $1 million.

A retirement announcement from Debbie Kresal, whose last day at KPL is January 16, 2024. " I am looking forward to enjoying my retirement with my family and friends, but I will miss everyone here who has become my second family."

This week's Bright Spots:

From Jennifer: "I wanted to submit a Bright Spot this week for Brandi. She has had a lot going on these first two weeks as our new Assistant Director (while also balancing CPP in the interim!), and I've immensely appreciated her measured, supportive, and compassionate approaches to the various things we've thrown at her in such a short time. It is already clear to so many of us that she is going to thrive in this role, lifting up KPL along the way."

From Amanda: "Quick shoutout to the SI staff for helping make the decorations for this year's tree. It's looking awesome! Plus extra kudos to Lina for making a pseudo book topper for it."

Bright Spot Holiday Edition Day 3

From Brandee: "I would like to thank the uptown staff, Kahlil, Claudia, and Joe and everyone who comes over to take shifts. You guys all make the library a wonderful place to work. I enjoy working with each and everyone of you and it really shows that when we service our patrons here at uptown. We have had so many families and children visiting uptown recently and it has been a pleasure to see the impact we have had in the community. "

From Heather: "I'm so grateful for all of the incredibly hardworking, relentlessly creative, and deeply compassionate team members in Youth & Family Services. They bring such energy, joy, and humor with them to work every day. I'm constantly impressed by their passion and dedication to their jobs--especially on the hard, exhausting days. Thank you for everything you do, YFS Team! You are all the shiniest of stars.
Southwest YFS had several desk coverage gaps in the past month or so. Shannon and her team stepped up to help cover them all! I am so grateful to each and every staff member who jumped right in to do kid-based reference and readers' advisory, give endless clues for the scavenger hunt, refill coloring sheets and crafts, help keep everything tidy, and deal with the near-constant noise of the children's room. Thank you so much."

From Janet: "My nomination is not just one person, but the whole crew here at Northside. I am so lucky to be working with such friendly and compassionate folks. We all work well together and enjoy each other's company. It's a pleasure to work with them every day."

From Lisa L:"Gabe arrives in the morning, a quiet kind of guy, while many are still just waking up. He does his walk around NS and puts things in order before beginning his cleaning routine. He is missed on his days off, the job he does is appreciated and we notice his attention to the smallest details. I am lucky enough to witness the pride he takes doing his job. I for one am very grateful that we have him on our team. Thanks for keeping us clean.
Jeff is great! He can accommodate almost any request from any staff member. In my opinion, he excels at finding solutions for staff. No request is too big, no solution too small. If it breaks, Jeff will try to fix it.
When the Youth Outreach Collection moved to the garage, Jeff made the transition as easy as possible. From putting up shelving to making sure there was a ladder for access, He was even willing to relocate his spiders. When my materials break through eager children’s attention, or they just wear out, or they get damaged in transport, Jeff is alway willing to find a solution. From the tiniest screwdrivers to the best location to plug in the computer. Jeff is willing to go with the flow and makes life for the rest of us better. Jeff is a great coworker, when I need random things for outreach, he never asks me what I could possibly need it for, but cheerfully points me in the right direction. Thanks Jeff for your thoughtful support.
I am very thankful for the Outreach Team. We all have the same goal, Serve the community to the best of our ability, but we each do it in a very individual way. Dan - during the day, only he can drive the BKM, he does it cheerily and makes every trip the best possible. Amy - Columbus Park - your storytimes, your trips to the county - all of your marketing skills (displays) you inspire me! Hillary & Kristen - you make things run smoothly and really know your patrons! Nate, thanks for working those evenings at the BKM stops. Harbor Market and the special events are a time when you shine and represent the best of what outreach can be. Thanks for working all of those weekends! And Marcia - You encourage us to keep trying new things. You encourage us to be the best we can be. You find our strengths and encourage us to play to them. You team us up when we need support and you shoo us away when we need to go home…You all make it look so easy, and I know it is a very difficult job, loading up, unloading, timing, weather, mechanical issues, working with children, families, classes, daycares, seniors, the homebound you all make such a positive impact on our community!"

From Shannon: "I'd like to give my SW branch staff kudos again for their perseverance this year. I know it wasn't easy for them to keep up with my multiple maps, mind-bending math and blue tape madness during the flooring project. Now that the dust has settled, I sometimes still find that tape peeking out somewhere and it makes me smile (remember when the range of CDs almost tipped over on the movers? Good times!) I love giving tours of our building now because it gets lots of compliments and they deserve it. "

From Hillary S. "I would like to give a shout-out to Dan Sommerfeld and Nate Herrera, our awesome Bookmobile drivers! Without their valuable skill sets as CDL drivers and their dedication to KPL, we wouldn't have near the presence and impact that we do in the community! We appreciate you!
I would also like to give a shout-out to Heather Thompson. I have known Heather for a few years by way of participating in KPL programs with my children. Heather has a way of connecting with youth and their families--facilitating book discussions, creating activities and crafts and inspiring others to read...Heather pours a lot into programming and our library experience has been greatly enhanced because of her time and talents! Thank you for everything you do! "

Bright Spots Holiday Edition Day 2

From Aliyah:"I'd like to give Claudia at Uptown praise, while we haven't had a cleaner in the mornings she's really gone above and beyond to keep up with all the cleaning at uptown, vacuuming, cleaning the bathrooms, checking the trash, she really is an amazing worker!"

From Joe: "I would like to send a big shout out and thanks to all my fellow staff at Uptown! Thank you for all the support and understanding when I take over the desk with all my crafts and program materials! Also a big thanks to all of YFS for supporting me over this first year here at KPL, I could not have made Uptown YFS as awesome as it is without all of you helping me along the way!"

From Barb: Shout out to Dan who has worked hard this year to reduce our trash and use more environmentally friendly cleaning chemicals. One of the most innovative ways he's made an impact is by purchasing a leaf sweeper that empties right into the trash receptacle, eliminating the need for wasteful plastic bags.

From Kahlil: "I want to highlight the work of the staff at UPT and SI. Everyone works hard to satisfy patrons, going over and beyond at times, which makes my job easier and keeps my spirits high. They truly mean a lot to me, and I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world besides a trillion dollars!"

Bright Spots Holiday Edition Day One

I want to begin by thanking everyone for their Bright Spot nominations all year. It's really impactful to take a minute and send a word of praise to someone you work with and let them know that what they do matters to you and to the people we serve. So this week we have a very special Thanksgiving edition. I hope you see your name here, either as the person sending praise or receiving recognition. We All contribute to the success of KPL and to the success of our community and all of you matter!

From Elliott:
"Hi friends,
I just want to shout out any YFS rockstars at NS who have been helping Maria Maravilla out. She came in today and mentioned that while she didn't recognize me (understandable as I am only here once a month), many YFS folks here had been helping her find books. English is her second language, and children's materials have been very helpful for her in learning the language and to read English. She particularly likes true stories, and said she had been learning so much from the books we had been giving her. She typically asks for 12-15 books at a time and she was so excited to share some of the cool things she had been learning.
Maria was really excited to learn about historical figures and major events that she didn't know about. She said getting these books was great to help her work on her English, but also was like getting to go to school and learn. I speedran getting her a selection today because she only had about 5 minutes before she needed to leave for church, but she was very excited to read about the people and events I grabbed for her.
Maria was just so beyond grateful for all the help we provide. It was a really positive interaction and I want to shout out the amazing work everyone has been doing to go above and beyond with readers' advisory for this patron. Way to go the extra mile to improve ESL literacy and incorporate some major general education along with it!
I love that I work with such major rockstars!"

Also from Elliott:
"I want to shout out Zander and Karen, who made sure we had a plan in place for a 12 year old at SW at closing on Friday. I was in the teen space making sure the other four teens had rides arranged or had plans otherwise on places to go. Zander let me know that there was a 12 year old teen who might not have a ride by 6:15. He had already arranged with Karen to make sure at least two of us could stay until the teen was picked up. I also volunteered to stay (Karen and I worked Saturday and could flex a few minutes if needed), and sat with the teen until their ride got here - which was thankfully before 6:15. I am so glad that we had a quick plan in place already by the time I met the teen, and that we were all so willing to make sure they got home safe. Grateful to have such a flexible and compassionate set of coworkers looking out for our young friends!"

From Tessa:
"I'm so thankful to have Jennifer as our NS branch manager. Her leadership manifests itself in many ways, including Northside's supremely executed responsive displays to timely events or further marketing library resources/new formats people may be unaware of. I so greatly appreciate her efforts for clear communication to her staff, both in email and face-to-face. She really has a knack for looking at the big picture while simultaneously focusing on the small details that create a big service impact to our patrons and for KPL (especially NS) staff. Yay Jennifer!
I must also acknowledge "the Wolf to my Fox" - Shawn amazes me with her creativity and early education expertise on a daily basis. Her background in child development and early education is such a valuable resource to the families we serve. Youth & Family Services would be lacking such an important star without Shawn's hard (and fun) work ethic!"

From Claudia:
"I actually love working with all the SI/UP staff. They all are helpful to our patrons and go the extra mile. Kahlil is a great boss too! He cares about the patron's and us."

New Assistant Director Chosen

I am delighted to announce that we have chosen an Assistant Library Director. Congratulations to Brandi Cummings! Brandi will begin her new role Monday morning and will continue to manage CPP during our search for her replacement. Thanks to Michelle and the full leadership team for their participation in the selection process.

Congratulations to Shannon for winning another collection grant from UW's Center for East Asian Studies. The $1,000 grant will add a PopAsia collection at Uptown.

Congrats to Heather and team for grant funding to host a series of programs called Thinking Money for Kids!

This week's Bright Spots:

From Brandi:
"I want to nominate Emily Kastelic for a bright spot this week. Emily has been running our Call In Book Club, a partnership with KAFASI where people who may have trouble getting out of the house can call into a shared line and engage in a book discussion. This program is nearly invisible to the rest of us, but Emily's impact is great. The members love getting together to chat about the titles they read, and I am so proud that this is a service Emily is providing to part of our community that can often be overlooked. Great work, Emily!"

From Barb:
Brandi has been a Bright Spot in this organization since the day she joined us 15 years ago, and through the years she has worked hard to learn and grow in every position she's taken, often spearheading projects outside the confines of her position description and always lending a hand to others. Today marks the culmination of her efforts. She has gained the trust and friendship of her colleagues and earned her place as the new Assistant Director with a 100% vote of confidence from the interview team. There is no one who loves KPL more and I am confident that she will shine in her new role. Please join me in congratulating her and offering your full support as she takes this next step in her successful career.

KPL Honored on the National Stage Again!

Congratulations to all of you for receiving Honorable Mention in the Jerry Kline Community Impact Award national competition! Only one library was selected and only 2 libraries received honorable mention from all the applications submitted from across the country. Read the lovely profile in Library Journal  Once again, KPL shines brightly, a beacon for other libraries to follow. Because it isn't just hard work that gets you this type of award, it's big hearts and a lot of courage, something KPL sure has a lot of! Your community is proud of you and so is your library board and your director- Congratulations on an honor well deserved!

Congratulations to Brandi for wowing her audience at the annual Library Marketing conference which was held this week in Columbus, Ohio. Way to shine!

We'll be hosting candidates from Ohio and Texas to interview for the Assistant Director position this coming week. Please be sure to introduce yourself and make them feel welcome. We're also delighted to have an internal candidate. Good luck to them all!

We'll participate in the State Parks Pass program again this year and we've expanded to a multitude of passes for checkout including Betty Brin Children's Museum, Discovery World and the Milwaukee Art Museum. You can discover them all in the catalog by using the term "experience pass."

Have a warm and restful weekend, everyone!

One Retirement and Lots of Bright Spots!

Kristin Kornkven has announced her retirement date as December 30, 2023. Hired in April 2000, Kristin has been a faithful member of the Simmons Neighborhood Library team for most of her career at KPL. We will miss her terribly and hope to see her often reading all those books she's meant to get to for the last 23 years.

Lots of Bright Spots again this week:

From Karen:
"I'd like to nominate Langsdorf (and Mitchell) for a Bright Spot award this week.
Lisa Langsdorf and Mitchell are amazing! I asked her if she had a treasure chest that I could borrow for a program this week. After getting off work on Monday, she went home and got the one that her son, Mitchell had and she came right back to work to give it to me. Thank you Lisa and Mitchell! "

From Megan:
" I would like to nominate Karen and Joe in YFS for a Bright Spot Award for helping me deliver the Light the Way grant collection items to Shalom this morning. Karen covered the desk so that Joe could help me load bookshelves and drive them over to Shalom. Joe also assembled all three shelves for me, which was really helpful.
I would also like to nominate CS, especially Tara, for ordering and receiving all the items for me and answering my questions about the process.
I would like to also nominate Aaron for creating the stickers and signage for the project. "

From Barb: Megan is my Bright Spot this week, as her Light the Way grant funded the deposit collections you see here at Shalom and also at Women's and Children's Horizons. Her kind heart will bring sunshine into the lives of children and families in their darkest hours. Thank you, Megan!

Congratulations and Bright Spots for this week

Congratulations to Heather, who is the spotlighted WLA member for December 2023! We look forward to reading all about you in the December WLA newsletter.

Congratulations to Aaron who is the Kenosha.com  Kenoshan of the Week! If you didn't know, Aaron creates an incredible haunted house every year and it is very popular with fans of the macabre. Visit if you can and you won't be disappointed!

News from Heather:

"Principal Ursula Perry at Harvey Elementary reached out to KPL, wondering if we would participate in a reading program for their students. In this program, students are encouraged to come to a KPL location 10 times between now and mid-January. All we have to do is punch their reading card (shown below) for them. Of course we said yes, we would be happy to participate! Tara is ordering extra hole punchers to make sure that every service point has one. They should be arriving soon. Until then, feel free to make an "X" through the circles with a marker if presented with one of these cards."

Look who graduated from WLA Leadership training this year

 Bright Spots this week:

From Amanda: "Everyone who made Haunted Simmons and Slightly Spooky Simmons possible has a great deal of my respect, admiration, and thanks. Just as much of that goes to all of the Simmons staff who have watched the building get coated in bats and spiderwebs and coexisting with Mister Boneman McGee (my skeleton) who has been hanging out in the Staff Space. These events could not have been done without all of them.
Extra special shout out to Laura Kastelic for volunteering again this year to share her stories from when she worked at Simmons. She may not see this, but she is still part of this Bright Spot.
The Day Of staff took a group photo as well before the event.

From Emily: "I’d like to nominate the Haunted Simmons crew for Bright Spots! Amanda, Kahlil, Ed, Michaela, Alex L., and Nate were amazing and the event went so well! All the guests loved it, and by my surveys at least six of them are now believers in our ghost(s)! Also a shoutout to Elliot for sourcing amazing props from the Kenosha theater and Jessica for playing a very spooky ghost. It was a great night!"

From Amy Rae: "Customer service is more than just being polite and remembering to smile: When a Chromebook and hotspot set was returned earlier this week, DJ and Luiza immediately knew who we should try to get it to.  One of our regular patrons, familiar to YFS Southwest staff especially, had asked about the hotspots before, because she and her children needed internet access.  We checked the set out to my work card and placed it on my desk, then made sure that relevant staff knew to flag her down and ask if she still needed the set.  On Wednesday, she came in and was happy to check out the hotspot and Chromebook.  Her family will have WIFI for the next two months and a laptop for the next year because our staff listened and internalized a patron's needs."

Welcome to Joy

The contract is signed and construction will begin shortly on our gorgeous new library just for kids birth through 5th grade! We've been working for months with our architects to create a space where kids will love to learn and have a whole lot of fun doing it. This library will be for every child from across the city, the county, and the region, and our greatest hope is that it will inspire children to discover their interests and develop the confidence to pursue their dreams.

Our location in the heart of a disadvantaged neighborhood comes with challenges. We are bound to see more children with cognitive and/ or physical disabilities. That's why the Kenosha Achievement Center will host Early Head Start, Sprouts Playgroups, and Help Me Grow programs at our new library. These programs are designed to support the children and families struggling with these challenges.

We are also likely to see more children who have experienced trauma. That's why we're using an LSTA grant to provide Playmaker Project training for all our YFS staff as well as the YFS staff at Community Library. Playmakers support childcare professionals and organizations creating optimal environments to help kids overcome traumas associated with Adverse Childhood Experiences like poverty, violence, and substance abuse. Helping our staff recognize these traumas in our young visitors and design joyous programming that nurtures and heals will be lifechanging for many young children.

How lucky we are to have a chance to help people every day and give them the support to be successful in their lives! Please take a moment and let this sink in. Every one of you contributes to the success of the library, whether you plan programs, fix the air conditioning, or check in returned materials. All of you are important and all of you are valued, not just by me, but by your coworkers and all the people who count on us as a place where they are welcome and free to explore the world of ideas. On behalf of them, I thank you for the tremendous service you provide and for creating a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Marcia Accepts Outreach Award for KPL Team

Look who's onstage at the annual Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services conference to accept a national award! Here's the award letter and a great pic of Marcia, who is just bursting with pride for her team! Special congratulations to Lisa Langsdorf for her marvelous work highlighted in the award letter. Miss Lisa, you are amazing!

Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services

1190 Meramec Station Road

Ballwin, MO 63021

Press Release – For Immediate Release

The Outreach Department at The Kenosha Public Library, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, is the recipient of the 2023 Preschool Outreach and School Services Inspirations Award. The Preschool Outreach and School Services Inspirations Award, sponsored by the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services and in honor of Danielle Marshall for her outstanding work with 3C Patient Advocacy, is presented annually to a library, department, or an individual who has provided exemplary library outreach services to children and students in their community, from age infant to college.

The Kenosha Public Library's Outreach Department, led by the dynamic Ms. Lisa Langsdorf, has consistently demonstrated outstanding dedication and creativity in their outreach efforts. Throughout the year from August 2022 to July 2023, the Outreach Department spearheaded a wide range of programs specifically tailored to various age groups, solidifying their impact on the community's education landscape.

For children aged 0-5, the department orchestrated an impressive 256 programs, hosted at local preschools, daycares, city parks, community partners, and even on their bookmobile. Notably, they offered literacy-enriched Storytimes at federally funded low-income Head Start locations, contributing to early childhood education initiatives. The summer Park & Play programs, featuring engaging Storytimes followed by physical activities and bookmobile visits, became a beloved tradition in the community.

A staggering 721 programs were designed for children aged 6-11, featuring STEM and STEAM sessions, Literacy Enrichment programs, and special events in local schools. The Outreach team's dedication to making learning interactive and engaging shone through Ms. Lisa Langsdorf's STEM or STEAM with Ms. Lisa program, where hands-on exploration of scientific concepts left a lasting impact on young learners.

Programs for ages 12-18 and "all ages" family programs totaled 45, including diverse activities like Citizen Science programs, family To-Go program kits, and interactive events. Notably, their partnership with local teen organizations showcased their commitment to fostering a sense of community and engagement among youth.

The Outreach Department's dedication and perseverance were aptly summarized by a community member in their recommendation letter: "The library outreach program is what makes Kenosha great."

The Preschool Outreach and School Services Inspirations Award will be presented at the Awards Ceremony during the 2023 Conference of the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Bright Spot Awards -Lots of them!

We are getting closer to the commencement of construction on the new library. The construction contract will go to Council on Monday evening and barring any disasters, we should have the thumbs up to begin. Check your email for the 3D images of the new spaces- they are simply stunning! We will begin posting photos of the space under construction over the next few weeks so we can all watch the progress and share the excitement with the public. I'll also share the pictures of the fabrics and play areas Heather and her team have selected for the space when I get updates from our architect..

Lots of Bright Spot Awards this week:

From Jennifer : "This morning, Patty spent an enormous amount of effort helping a patron in need. The patron is somewhat visually impaired, completely unfamiliar with technology, and assigned to do some coursework online by the government. Patty spent time showing him computer basics, helping him through the instructions he had been given, made sure he could see everything, and ultimately found him a more accessible way to complete this work - and even helped him get connected with KAFASI to request safe travel in the process. I overheard him telling her how grateful he was for her efforts, and how she made a difficult day much brighter. "I'm SO glad you were here to help me today - I will be back."

"Miss Shawn is clearly a bright spot for the kiddos and caregivers at our Thursday storytime here at Northside. They handpicked a stunning bouquet, just for her! (Photo attached)"

From Kimmy:

"I want to nominate Jennifer & Marcia for a bright spot. I was involved in a car accident on the way to work on Friday, September 29, where a lady turned in front of me and hit my driver's side of the vehicle. Both Jennifer and Marcia stepped up to the plate immediately to help me out. Marcia came in and covered my shift for me to be able to go to the ER and get both my baby and I to be checked out (we are okay) and Jennifer was super understanding of the situation and helped me come up with a solution while I figured out how to get to work since my car is now in the shop due to it not being driveable. I could have not asked for better individuals to be working with."

From Barb:
Thanks to everyone who pitched in this morning when the book sale opened at SW. The crowds were impressive! Thanks especially to Phillip who graciously assisted our elderly volunteers.

All Staff Day Pics

What a wonderful all-staff day! Linda did a great job capturing the day in pictures and you all looked so thoughtful and happy. I hope you enjoyed it and learned something that will be valuable to you going forward, whether for your personal or your professional life. Thanks again to all the staff who planned the event and helped throughout the day.

A couple of you have asked about the book I referred to from the sociologist whose research shows the impact of  social infrastructure like libraries on the health of a community. That book is Palaces for the People by Eric Klinenberg. I liked it so much when it came out that I gave a copy to the Mayor and a few of my favorite Alderpersons. I know you'll like it, too.

For those of you wondering how the meeting at Snap-on turned out- It went incredibly well! We were able to gain interest in the project and even gave a tour of the empty space. We're invited to submit a more formal proposal, so that's what we'll be working hard on for the next few days.

FAQ of the week: Will the old Uptown Library stay open?
Answer: Absolutely. Services will be geared toward teens and adults, but everyone is welcome.

In their weekly newsletter, the Library of Congress recognized Daniel Burnham's birthday on September 4, 1846. Dan was the architect of the Simmons Library and the reason the building is on the National Register of Historic Places. Take a minute to read about him.

The High Cost of Book Banning provides a quick look at how many Americans are behind the new wave of book banning in schools and libraries and the cost to the taxpayer for their activities.

Bright Spots for the week:

Linda Noyce for her service to KPL and the Kenosha Community these past years. Linda, we wish you all the best in your new position! Stop by often!

Everyone who planned, presented, set up and cleaned up for All Staff Day! What a terrific team you all are!

Happy fall weekend, everyone!

What's in the 2024 Budget?

We met with city administration last week and presented a draft 2024 operating budget for review. It looks likely that we will be funded at the level we asked for, so I feel like I can tell you what's in store without making promises that don't get kept. Please bear in mind that city administration is the first hurdle. The next is the council's finance committee in early November, then the full council in late November Nothing is absolutely certain till that vote is completed.

What's in the 2024 Budget:

Staff Wages
The City will fund a 2.5% Cost of Living (COLA) wage increase for all staff members beginning January 1, 2024. The city will also allow us to add one more step to our wage chart, so if you're at the top of your wage range this year, you'll get a step increase next year. I know that's good news for a number of you.

New staff for UCL
YFS staff currently stationed at UPT and SI will transfer to KPL Kids @Uptown Lofts on opening day. (Spring 2024) Additional staff will be hired to provide for 53 hours per week of service at the new location: M-F 9am to 6pm and Saturday/Sunday 12-4.

New air conditioner (chiller) at Northside
The original air conditioner installed in 1993 has had a remarkable life and we will be sad to see it go, but it barely made it through this past summer. We'll get that replaced early in 2024 so we're ready for next summer's heat.

Information from the City:

  • If you're on the city's health insurance plan you will enjoy another year without having to pay a health care insurance premium. Annual deductibles for us single folks will remain at $2500. If you're on a family plan your total annual deductible will still be $5,000 as a family but each person within the plan will tap out at $3200, which is a slight increase.
  • City Hall will close on Juneteenth in the coming year.
  • All city employees except KPD are migrating to Google Apps, which will make our lives so much easier when communicating with other city departments.
  • Flu shots administered by the city are for FT staff on city insurance. Please note that the Mayor has asked city HR to try and expand eligibility to all city staff, so if you're a part time library employee, stay tuned- we're trying to get you on the list of those eligible for the free flu shots.
  • COVID vaccinations should be available for free through the health clinic in a few months. Again, it's definitely for FT employees on the city's health insurance, but the Mayor is determined to find a way for all city employees to get the vaccination for free.
  • Remember the HRAs we would do at Transit every year? They will resume for those of you on the city's health insurance this spring.

A lot of people have asked me whether the Uptown Lofts apartments are "affordable housing." I have referred to them in all my grant applications as such. The city clarified with me this morning that the apartments are for low and moderate income folks and the rent is subsidized. So if people argue with you and tell you that the apartments are market rate, the price tag reflects market rate, but the people who qualify to live there get a lower rate than the advertised rent based on their income.

This week's Bright Spot nominations:

From Kahlil:

"Ed gave a tour to about 40 people from Kenosha's Sister City in Germany on 8/18. Based on the feedback that I received, the tour went amazing and everyone enjoyed themselves. Ed is a jewel to KPL!"

Stock the Children's Library!

Blue House Books continues to support the new children's library by crowdsourcing our collection. This is a wonderful opportunity to share your favorite children's book with the kids in our community at a price everyone can afford. All you need to do is visit the BHB website, pick your favorite book from the list of titles Amy Rae has selected, and purchase. The books will go to BHB, we will pick them up, and add a name plate to the book that includes your name. Please share this opportunity with family and friends. It's a low cost/ high impact way to spread the joy of reading.

________________
From Jennifer: You may have noticed in the fall/winter Insider that there is a new bilingual traveling exhibit at Northside: FRANKENSTEIN: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature // Penetrando en los Secretos de la Naturaleza.
This exhibit is scheduled to be on display from September 11 - October 21st. It arrived early, so I set it up for a few extra days.
Here is some additional information about the display, if you engage with any patrons on the topic:
The National Library of Medicine produced Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature/Penetrando en los secretos de la naturaleza, guest curated by historian and educator Susan E. Lederer, PhD (University of Wisconsin-Madison).
The traveling exhibition and companion website explore the power of the novel Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus to expose hidden fears of science and technology as human efforts to penetrate the secrets of nature continue. In 1816, Mary Shelley conceived a story about a scientist who creates a creature that can think and feel but is monstrous to the eye. Spurned by all, the embittered creature turns into a savage killer. Shelley’s story served as a metaphor for apprehensions about scientific advancement that continue to resonate today.
There is also an (English-only) companion website, linked here, which may be of interest to staff (or patrons) who are unable to see it in person.
_______________________
When new staff sits through orientation, I try to explain the difference between KCLS and KPL and how we serve as the administrative team for both entities. Did you know that KCLS, our county library system, also has a website? It's one more way to access our shared databases paid for through the System and read the technology plan for all 6 library locations in Kenosha County. And it may just make the complicated relationship between KPL and KCLS a little clearer.

This week's Bright Spot nominations:

From Marcia:
"I would like to nominate Patty Bajabir for a Bright Spot:
Yesterday afternoon I was on the phone with a lobby stop regular and she told me that she attends the Senior Reading Group at St. Catherine's which Patty took over hosting after Sue Vaal retired. This patron said the group is so welcoming and Patty does such a great job. She said this last time a new resident attended and she just loved it!"

From Jennifer:
"Daisy went above and beyond today when a patron came in with an accessibility request. The patron had gone to the transit office to request a large print bus schedule (which their website says you can request), but they were told it was unavailable. So, the patron came to Northside for help, where Daisy spent time meticulously enlarging and copying the schedule so the patron would have a copy they could read. We are so proud to have such a compassionate heart on the KPL Northside team!"

From Barb: Thanks to Katie Engle for taking on her new role as an Accounting/Payroll Specialist. In the true Katie way, she is doing a terrific job fearlessly and cheerfully learning all the aspects of her new position. It's great to have you in this position, Katie!

Happy weekend, everyone!

A Message of Gratitude to Librarians from Barack Obama (from medium.com)

To the dedicated and hardworking librarians of America:

In any democracy, the free exchange of ideas is an important part of making sure that citizens are informed, engaged and feel like their perspectives matter.

It’s so important, in fact, that here in America, the First Amendment of our Constitution states that freedom begins with our capacity to share and access ideas — even, and maybe especially, the ones we disagree with.

More often than not, someone decides to write those ideas down in a book.

Books have always shaped how I experience the world. Writers like Mark Twain and Toni Morrison, Walt Whitman and James Baldwin taught me something essential about our country’s character. Reading about people whose lives were very different from mine showed me how to step into someone else’s shoes. And the simple act of writing helped me develop my own identity — all of which would prove vital as a citizen, as a community organizer, and as president.

Today, some of the books that shaped my life — and the lives of so many others — are being challenged by people who disagree with certain ideas or perspectives. It’s no coincidence that these “banned books” are often written by or feature people of color, indigenous people, and members of the LGBTQ+ community — though there have also been unfortunate instances in which books by conservative authors or books containing “triggering” words or scenes have been targets for removal. Either way, the impulse seems to be to silence, rather than engage, rebut, learn from or seek to understand views that don’t fit our own.

I believe such an approach is profoundly misguided, and contrary to what has made this country great. As I’ve said before, not only is it important for young people from all walks of life to see themselves represented in the pages of books, but it’s also important for all of us to engage with different ideas and points of view.

It’s also important to understand that the world is watching. If America — a nation built on freedom of expression — allows certain voices and ideas to be silenced, why should other countries go out of their way to protect them? Ironically, it is Christian and other religious texts — the sacred texts that some calling for book bannings in this country claim to want to defend — that have often been the first target of censorship and book banning efforts in authoritarian countries.

Nobody understands that more than you, our nation’s librarians. In a very real sense, you’re on the front lines — fighting every day to make the widest possible range of viewpoints, opinions, and ideas available to everyone. Your dedication and professional expertise allow us to freely read and consider information and ideas, and decide for ourselves which ones we agree with.

That’s why I want to take a moment to thank all of you for the work you do every day — work that is helping us understand each other and embrace our shared humanity.

And it’s not just about books. You also provide spaces where people can come together, share ideas, participate in community programs, and access essential civic and educational resources. Together, you help people become informed and active citizens, capable of making this country what they want it to be.

And you do it all in a harsh political climate where, all too often, you’re attacked by people who either cannot or will not understand the vital — and uniquely American — role you play in the life of our nation.

So whether you just started working at a school or public library, or you’ve been there your entire career, Michelle and I want to thank you for your unwavering commitment to the freedom to read. All of us owe you a debt of gratitude for making sure readers across the country have access to a wide range of books, and all the ideas they contain.

Finally, to every citizen reading this, I hope you’ll join me in reminding anyone who will listen — and even some people you think might not — that the free, robust exchange of ideas has always been at the heart of American democracy. Together, we can make that true for generations to come.

With gratitude,

Barack
