News for the Week

National Library Week is April 7-13, 2019
Brandi and Aaron have lots of fun publicity and things to share with the public about our value to the community. Once again, we'll do Food for Fines. For each non-perishable food item donated, patrons will receive $1.00 off their fines. Food collected will go to the Shalom Center Food Pantry.

Shredding trucks will park at NS and SW tomorrow for the community to bring in their documents. The event is sponsored by the city and is free to the public. Each person is limited to 5 boxes of materials.

Don't forget to join us for the Grand Finale of the 2019 Big Read on Monday evening, 7pm, St. Mark's church. We will welcome Luis Alberto Urrea, author of this year's selection, Into the Beautiful North. You'll have a chance to meet the author, ask him questions about his wonderful book, the writing life, or his next book. Luis is known for his vivacious personality. We expect a very engaging and lively discussion! Hope to see you there!

Welcome to Antoinette Campbell, our newest Library Board member. Antoinette and I first met as we worked together on the Kenosha Parks Alliance. Antoinette is a Restorative Justice Coordinator for KUSD, and a pastor at the Greater Mt. Hebron Church of God in Christ. Her church leads many food distributions in the Lincoln Park neighborhood and organizes the annual backpack giveaway to children in need. We are thrilled to have her join our board!

Don't forget to vote on Tuesday April 2!

Good luck to our spelling bee team as they defend our city title this Friday evening at the Stella Hotel. We'll be there to cheer you on in our flapper dresses!

This week's Bright Spot Award goes to all staff who helped with this year's Big Read! For all of you who carved time out of your busy day to introduce a program, distribute books, attend a book discussion, plan, or promote the program, THANK YOU! It takes a team of enthusiastic people to pull off an event of this proportion, and once again KPL shines.

Have a wonderful (albeit cold) weekend, everyone!

News for the Week

Congratulations to Jill for publishing "How to Hold a Successful Tech Outreach Program for Seniors" on the Demco Ideas and Inspiration blog. What a lovely article! We are so proud!

The Library Board met last night and approved a new organization chart that replaces the Customer Experience Manager with a Division Head for Public Services and replaces the Assistant Director for Support Services with a Division Head for Support Services. Rob has been appointed to Division Head for Support Services, effective today. I am very grateful to him for the terrific work he has done recently in his Interim Assistant Director position. I know he will be awesome in his new role.
We continue to search for the perfect person to lead the Public Services Division.

The Board would like for us to expand on the Staff Recognition Schedule that outlines what rewards are assigned to each milestone in service. For instance, when you reach 15 years of service, you receive a certificate, 15 hours paid time of, and a book honoring you for the collection. The Board thinks we should do something extra special at 35, 40, 45 and 50 years. If you would like to brainstorm ways we can honor staff with very long tenure, please let me know. We'll form a team of 3-5 people to decide how to expand the recognition schedule.

The Board approved a full day closed for staff training on May 22 at SW. We have invited Miguel Figueroa from ALA's Center for the Future of Libraries to engage us in fun activities about matching trends in society to future library services. Will drones deliver holds? Will driverless cars conduct delivery service? What about augmented reality? Is a new information format coming soon? How will Blockchain technology change the way we conduct business? How do we prepare now for these changes in customer expectations?
In the afternoon, we will immerse in some fun hands-on activities like film making in The Hub, computer coding in the youth area, story time yoga, and "merchandising" of the collection. If you have an interest you'd like to dabble in or if there's something you'd like to teach, please fill out this form.

Zander Miller will join us for an orientation period next week in his new role as Digital Strategy Librarian. Once he finishes library school, he will join us full time (June 2019). Among his many talents, Zander is a very serious gamer. If that describes you, please introduce yourself to Zander. You'll make an instant friend.

Welcome to Jeffery Linders who joins the Maintenance team. Jeff comes to us from Parkside. I hear he is an exceptional carpenter- one more skill to add to this talented team's list!

UW Parkside's Marketing Research class will be conducting an Outreach Needs Assessment from now until April 30. They will be considering how best to deploy our staff, services, and programs to positively impact third grade reading levels in our community. I'm looking forward to reading their report!

We have offers for volunteer hours from KUSD (high school and grades 4-5) and from a local company, which sends teams of 10-20 people for half days. If you have ideas for volunteer projects, please let me know!

This week's Bright Spot Award goes to Jennifer for her incredibly successful Big Read planning and execution. Jennifer, you're a rock star!

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

News for the week

The Friends of the Library Bookstore in the SW lobby is coming together, thanks to our infinitely talented Maintenance team! Look for a grand opening during the summer book sale.

Thanks to Elkid for writing a successful application to fund a high school student or college freshman for the summer as an Inclusive Intern. We will recruit a young person who represents the diversity of our community and who is interested in a career in libraries to work alongside us all summer. This paid position will be funded through PLA.

The Common Council approved our contract with Harboe Architects to study the Simmons library building and write an Historic Structure Report. That document will provide a plan for restoring the building to its glory and maintaining it in the future. Each step will include a price tag so we can pursue private partnerships. The study will include a plan to restore the park to its original glory. The Wisconsin Historical Society is helping guide the project. Look for the final report around the first of next year.

Congratulations to Jennifer and her stellar team on a grand kickoff of the 2019 Big Read! What a magical opening event! The quality of programming is breathtaking!

I was able to get a sneak peek into the Stella Hotel as it prepares for its April 1 opening. Hope you can join us for the Literacy Council's spelling bee that evening. The theme is the Great Gatsby, which means we get to recycle our flapper dresses from the last Foundation gala. Looking forward to watching KPL win the spelling bee once again! This year our spelling dynamos include Amy Klein, Heather Thompson, Jennifer Meixelsperger, Jake Bowen and Katie Meeker (alternate)
Thank you, brilliant KPLers!

The next Library Board meeting in scheduled for Thursday, March 14th at 5:30 at SW. Note the day change- we normally meet the second Tuesday of the month.

Daylight Savings Time switch happens on Sunday March 10th! Let's spring forward!!

I'm retreating to the Louisiana heat for a few days to kiss grand babies. I'll be out until Thursday March 14th but I'm always available by phone. (262-221-5414) In my absence, Rob is in charge.
I'll bring back some warm air.
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
